From match to date: when to ask

Too early feels pushy, too late and the chat fizzles out. How to tell it's time to meet.

A match feels good. But a match isn't getting to know someone yet. That happens when you're sitting across from each other.

Plenty of chats fizzle out because nobody makes the move. Not out of disinterest, but because both people are waiting for the other one to ask.

The right signals

Once you've gone back and forth a few times, the replies are getting longer and you're talking about more than the weather, the moment has usually arrived. As a rough rule of thumb: after three to five days or around twenty messages.

The longer you wait, the more you build up a picture in your head that no real person can live up to. Meeting early is the more honest test.

Ask concretely

"We should meet up sometime" is nice, but easy to let slide. Better: "Fancy a coffee by the canal on Thursday after work?" One day, one place, a manageable setting.

That way the other person can simply say yes or suggest another time. And if the answer is no, at least you know, and you can put your energy into conversations that keep going.
